I had posted a message back in December regarding my pending reservation at Babbo and requested some suggestions. I want to thank those who responded because your suggestions were great. I had dinner there last week with 2 others and the experience was better than we had anticipated. Here is a few of the things we ordered:
Appetizers- We ordered the Grilled Octopus, Warm Lamb Tongue and Pig Foot Milanese. The octopus was the clear favorite, we found ourselves almost fighting over it. The pig foot was a nice surprise, we did not know what to expect but it was one of the more flavorful things I have had in some time. We did not love the lambs tongue, it was okay but the octopus was amazing and the pigs foot an unexpected hit. We may have had our expectations too high on that dish.
Pasta-There were 3 of us but we could not decide on only 3 pastas so we ordered 4 including the Beef Cheek Ravioli, Mint Love Letters, Lambs Brain "Francobolli" and one of the specials, a pasta with snails. We found ourselves once again jousting over a dish, this time the beef cheek ravioli. We had high expectations of this dish and it was exceeded, it was great. The mint love letters was also very good. I did not try the pasta special, snails are not my thing, but the others finished it off. Finally, the lambs brain ravioli was ordered by my niece, who insisted that she was going to be adventurous. She did not like this, however, and said it had a "fishy" taste. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Secondi- We ordered the duck, sweatbreads and rabbit. The rabbit was recommended by our waiter. The rabbit was very good. The duck was our favorite and we are still talking about it. I am sorry to report that we did not like the sweatbreads. We had never had sweatbreads before and decided to try it. Our waiter told us that it was a "love or hate" dish. We did not hate it but I would not order it again, just not our taste.
Desserts-We ordered the pistachio semifreddo, saffron panna cotta and the ricotta cheesecake. The only thing I remember was the pistachio semifreddo, which was delicious. It is not that we did not like the others but at this point the wonderful wine was kicking in
Wine-This was the nicest surprise of the evening. I assumed that the wines would have outrageous markups or that they would push us to try the higher priced wines. Not the case at all. The wines were very reasonable, some not too much higher than some retail prices I have seen. The sommelier actually talked us out of a higher priced wine and suggested a 1996 Barbaresco for approximately $70. We asked for a suggestion on a second bottle and he recommended a great 1996 Barolo for approximately $90. Both wines were terrific and I appreciated the advise and recommendations of a gifted and honest sommelier.
We were seated upstairs which had a nice cozy feel. The service was flawless, the best service we have had in a very long time. It was a great evening and I want to again thank all of you for your suggestions.
