Last Thursday I had a friend in town. She is an exec chef in Boston at an upscale chinese restaurant. Her and her girl friend were in town and the one place she HAD to eat was at Mission Chinese. I decided to set up a progressive dinner ending at Mission Chinese. 4 people, one who is a vegatarian and does not eat fish/seafood.
I made 5pm reservations at Hogs and Rocks because, well , its one of my favorite places and if you are going to eat at 4 restaurants in one night; oysters and charcutterie seemed like a good place to start.
Hogs and Rocks:
a few glasses of brut rose and a few old fashions to start
pearl point oysters confirming my dislike of west coast oysters and my love for east coast ones.
duck hearts: always a favorite
Deviled eggs- Phenominal. I swear: how a devilied egg can be so good and complex?
then off to 6:30 reservations at Range. I had never been, but I felt this was a good representation of the Mission food scene based on recomendations from friends.
Love the space and the bar!
AMAZING cocktails. I had one with fresh strawberries, st germain, cascha(sp) and basil. it was wonderful.
Little Gem with raddish, fried capers, parm and roasted garlic vinagrette. this was the most perfectly dressed salad. it really was the stand out dish, somewhat shockingly
Goat cheese and sorell stuffed pasta, this was the other stand out dish. the lime they add really made the flavour pop and be vibrants
chicken liver mouse
asparagus with goat cheese and orange slices
Next we were off to Foreign Cinema for 8pm reservations. I picked FC because it was the first of this type of restaurant to go in the Mission and its been a staple for over 15 years.
Farmed eeg and mushroom omlette-this was melt in your mouth amazing!
brandade-way to fishy for me, personally
baked goat cheese- wonderful
and the duck breast-also wonderful
and finally on to Mission Chinese, we were the second to last table to be seated. got there at 10:15
Chilled buckwheat boodle- Oh the love of cumin SOOOO good
Mouth watering chicken. I really liked this dish a lot- the flavour was spot on and very balanced yet complex
Eeg custard: not for me, roe was too big and i dont care for sea urchin
sweet peas, i didnt even bit this one as I was so much more into the other dishes
Pastrami: im a jew and i never thought of pastrami any other way then a sandwich but this was phenominal
Thrice bacon: my only complaint is that there was a lack of bacon. if they called it rice cake then it would be accurate. however i still really enjoyed it.
Salt cod rice, tooka bite, it was good, but ther ewas much better on the table
Lamb noodle soup. I like the flavours but im not a fan of meat in soup other then chicken, personal prefernce
wild pepper leaves: this was my most favorite dish, I ate all of it. literally drank the bowl and ate the leaves after everyone else was done with the dish.
Wintermelon soup: good flavour but something about the texture of the actual melon was weird to me, maybe it was just too big of a cut
Pork belly: good, but its pork belly, not too exciting
brocoli and beef check: great but still focused on the chicken and pepper leaves
