Last weekend my cousin's wife, a native of Madrid, was finally able to move to SF after months of paperwork. She's far away from her family, a bit homesick, and missing her native food. She's perused the menus of a couple of Spanish tapas places in SF, but said that the food was a lot more American than Spanish, just served on small plates.
I'd love to be able to suggest a few restaurants they can enjoy that have authentic Spanish food. In my experience visiting Madrid, that has meant jamon serrano, jamon iberico (which I don't think can be had in the US), tortilla, and lots of grilled meat and fish, but I'm sure I don't have a comprehensive understanding of Spanish cuisine.
They live in SF, but have a car, so suggestions outside of the city are welcomed, too.
