Au Pied de Cochon in Les Halles--worth a visit?

My husband is intrigued by the 4AM french onion soup at Au Pied de Cochon. We hopefully won't be as drunk as I was in my early 20s during my previous visits and I really don't remember if the restaurant was any good or just famous.
We're in Paris for a limited time so I don't want to waste it tracking down mediocre food. For reference, I make my own onion soup at home and am really satisfied with my recipe--we live in SFand I found that Thomas Keller's Bouchon creation was very blah as is Cafe des Amis'.
Has anyone been there recently? Is it tacky?
I know it's cheesy (pun intended!) but we really like onion soup and if you have a recommendation for something open next week please share.
Thanks.
