We were on our way to the movies last night (Stepford Wives, Connecticut's (un)official state movie) and decided to grab a quick bite to eat first. We had one hour and were near Loew's Theatre off I-84 Exits 7/8. Fast food choices abounded...yech... Applebee's and Bennigan's were right nearby and my teenage daughter was shouting enthusiastically for Applebees but (lucky for me) you could see they had a line outside waiting to get in and it would take too long.

So I decided to drive up Federal Road towards Costco to see what might be around. I pulled into the Shoprite Plaza and spied a Goodfella's Pizza place. Went inside and it was hot -- no AC. It was so muggy and humid, I said faghedaboudit. Also in the plaza was a place called Asia Garden. It looked very non-descript on the outside, but our time was dwindling so we took our chances.

And am I glad we did! I was expecting mediocre chinese but instead we had an excellent meal. The room is very nice, large, open, bright. The servers are very efficient, water always refilled, attentive. Keeping things simple and pressed for time for apps we ordered Beef Teriyaki skewers and Spare Ribs. For an entree we split an order of Sesame Chicken.

Beef Teriyaki was tender and flavorful and not dried out as it is prone to be in suburbia. The Spare Ribs were large and very meaty, and we had to take most of them to go because we wouldn't have room for the main course. Sesame chicken is another old standby, but Asia Garden totally got it right. Deep fried battered chicken pieces with a sweetish brown sauce, scallions and sesame seeds, no yucky fillers.

In addition to chinese, they also have a japanese menu that includes sushi, tempura and bento box specialities.

Oh yes...we made our movie on time.
