Asanebo, report

Well, like Mr. Wolf, sometimes my work takes me to Toluca Lake.

After a job well done, sushi was in order, and heck we were close to sushi row...with Shunji on the horizon for a pal's bday, what better warm up act than his old stomping grounds and home of his bro Tetsuya....well, we were well taken care of by young Kenji of Tokyo.

$80 15 nigiri sushi special incl. 2 apps and soup for starters

tomato crab salad thing..."ok" (not a throwaway)

japanese scallop with some shredded fried taro or something on top and spinach and mushrooms underneath...step up.

miso with clams...clams are better than tofu if you ask me, but i like my miso, if at all, at the end of a meal, not in the beginning.

sushi came 5 nigiri to a plate X3, pre-lightly sauced as applicable, some seared skin.

I'm surely forgetting some but it included

surf clam so tender you wouldn't know it was clam
japanese octopus, cut through a circle and spread on top like scallop...very tender
toro ... tastosterone
blue fin tuna ... flavor suited gorgeous deep color
red snapper
sockeye salmon ... strong salmon flavor
spanish mackerel (i like it better when less fishy)
halibut fin
santa barbara uni ... sweet, intact, and the nori was a standout too
hokkaido snow crab ... nice long piece, luscious
a few random "jacks" ... seared skin like shunji does...nice

a few bonus rounds...sweet shrimp, huge, pretty good, not great; japanese scallop (super tender, yuzu...maybe the gold medal winner)

Cold beers.

I like it here. big menu with lots of hot and cold dishes...sort of different coverage than shunjis (id say more gourmet bar snacks like kobe beef and fried lovelies, than Kaiseki)...but i tend to like sashimi and sushi better.

All and all, an excellent and not inexpensive sushi meal. This spot is right up there for me in the top echelon of sushi bars I've tried in LA. The $80 special is a fairly good deal. But those bonus rounds get you every time!

PS...sorry no photos...I don't mind shooting pastrami in the privacy of my own home, but I'm not a big sushi photographer it sort of breaks up the serenity for me.
