I've never visited several of the Chicago restaurants that garner a lot of critical attention, like Trotters, Arun's, Tru, Everest and Trio. As funds become available, I'd like to try some of these. I picked Arun's, mostly because it's Thai, and made reservations for February 15 (avoiding the higher-priced Valentine's Day menu the night before -- they're charging an extra $40 per person on the 14th).
In anticipation, I Googled previous Chowhound posts on Arun's. The results were most unsettling:
"Arun is the worst meal we've ever had in 20 years of high-end reviewing, and a total fraud by restaurant critics"
"saltiest meal we've had by far"
"worthwhile, but only if someone else is paying"
(ouch! that one hurt)
My question: is there anyone out there who thinks it is worthwhile to try Arun's, once, or should I strike it from my list, cancel the reservation (hopefully it's not too late), and do something else? I already know where to get good (far less expensive) Thai, so I'm not asking for Thai alternatives to Arun's -- rather, I'm interested in spending my money wisely and enjoying at a restaurant that consistently gets high praises, but I want it to be worth it.
