A while back somebody asked for a Chinese restaurant recommendation around Commerce and I directed them to Monterey Park. However it turns out you can get a pretty good Chinese meal in the Wood Dragon Restaurant in the Commerce Casino (in the hotel lobby). Wood Dragon isn't very big--kind of lounge sized, and I presume is part of the latest trend to draw Chinese diners to popular commercial venues (and what can be more popular for Chinese than a casino). Wood Dragon is not a destination restaurant but it's fine if you're in the area. We had the beef chow fun, the cha shu bao, and the beef bing, all of which were decent. But what I'd really like to try is the clay pot feast, a gigantic amalgam of napa, shrimp in the shell, fish dumplings, mushrooms, tomatoes, glass noodle, chicken and quail eggs. Unfortunately it would have pre-empted trying anything else on the menu, but the table next to us ordered it and it looked fantastic. Other interesting items include beef brisket noodle soup and braised fish head hot pot.
