Thanks for those who responded to my posting. My friends and I had a great time at Apizz, despite some churly though efficient service from our waitress.
We had the pizza margherita which was fantastic, a little too much cheese so that the middle part of the crust steamed a little, rather than baked to a crisp, but delicious nevertheless.
The whole fish was really good too, but could have used more salt. In addition, we asked them to fillet it but whoever did so left a row or two of bones in the flesh. Seems that at least the fish station there isn't too detail-oriented.
By far the best dish for me was the open ravioli, with basil and ricotta with brown butter. It comes out sizzling and the smell makes everyone at the table notice it immediately. It's very hot when it comes out of the oven so don't be too quick to eat it. (All three of us burned our mouths in our rush to get at it.)
The meatballs were great and even though there are only 2 of them they are so rich and meaty that 3 of us couldn't finish them, in addition to everything else we ordered.
Very good wine list that goes well with the food. We ended up getting 2 bottles (or was it 3?) of a Sicilian red (very reasonable at $28.
My favorite though was the great bread (perhaps from Sullivan St.?) that was served with ricotta and tomato sauce. Great variation on the usual bread and butter or olive oil.
They also take credit cards now, although they still have the ATM in the basement.
A note on the service: I was walking out of the bathroom and overheard the hostess speaking to a party of four whose table was not ready. She apologized and offered to buy them a round of drinks for being so patient. Very classy.
As for the churlish waitress, my friends and I were in a happy, fun mood and tried to draw her in to giving us recommendations, or even smiling, to no avail. She was efficient though, but she could have added a lot more to the evening if she had been friendlier.
