Andalu is worth checking out

I haven't noticed anyone talking about Andalu on 16th and Gurerrero.

At first I resisted this place because its name and the fact that it serves small dishes implies that it ought to be Andalusian. It's not. It's nouvelle. It doesn't pretend to be Andalusian. When I got over that prejudice, I was able to start appreciating this place for what it is. And what it is is consistently excellent.

There are some dishes on the menu here which are as good as anything in the bay area. One of my favorites is a halibut wrapped in cabbage which is then grilled so that the cabbage gets a nice seared flavor. This is then served on a bed of faro in a perfectly delightful sauce.

There are a number of adventurous combinations: watermelon salad with feta cheese for example. It actually works. The dressing is simply lemon juice and there are also finely chopped onions in the mix.

Desserts are also consistently excellent.

After my dinner at French Laundry last night, I reflected that a great dining experience could be had for much less money, by simply ordering nine dishes at Andalu.
