I stayed at Hotel Vitale last night after I ran the Wildflower Triathlon down in Paso Robles, my parents also stayed. I was very excited because we got a great rate, it's across from the Ferry Building, and the Hotel is beautiful.
We decided to eat at Americano even though my one previous experience wasn't so great because we had driven all day, I was ravenous, and it was a beautiful night with all the doors open. We were seated 45 minutes late and ended up at a table that everyone passes right before they go outside. The hostess clearly had no experience as she didn't even offer us a drink for our wait. We did have reservations, but even then we sat late. It was another twenty minutes before we saw our server, my brother had already gone to the bar to not only get us drinks, but ask the bartender what was going on. He was a nice guy and let my brother know that they were short-staffed and would get someone over immediately. Immediately turned out to be another twenty minutes later when my brother had literally written down for the kitchen what we wanted to eat. I know it's a bit unorthodox, but there weren't many places open around there, and with the hour getting later, we were all going insane.
When our server finally came over he had sweat beading down his forehead because he was really scrambling to get so many tables attended too. he was the blessing of the night. he did a great job considering he had 1/3 of a 140 seat restaurant to cater to. The sous chef in charge sent us out an amuse that was hamachi thinly sliced with an avocado slice on top. Sadly, this was an indicator that our meal to come would be inedible. It was not only unseasoned, but the fish smelled and tasted horrible!.
Our salads ended up being fine, though a bit frou-frou. After our plates were cleared we waited fifteen minutes before our entrees arrived and when they did 3 out of 4 of them were cold. My mothers albacore with rapini and white beans was pretty decent. I ordered the rib eye which had a piece of grissle running through it, was cold, and uncuttable. My brother ordered the "short ribs" which turned out to be one rib (no bone), some pea puree on top of it, cold meat, and fairly good mashed potatoes and carrots. My father got the fettucini with dungeness crab which had barely any crab and was also cold.
At this point the only thing we could do was laugh...and bet. My brother and I made a bet, I said that some would be comped, he said nothing. I won, but the comped the "amuse" if you can believe that. The manager in charge ended up comping the entire bill, but sadly, i would have done better eating at McDonald's which I haven't done in 7 years.
In their defense, they sent up a bottle of white wine and Reccuiti chocolates in apology.
Sorry to post such a thoroughly negative review but I would never send anyone to the restaurant, the hotel, I would
