amazing lunch at Saks Fifth Avenue

Haven't been to this joint for awhile, but took my mother there after we did the orchid show at Rock Plaza and a few floors of shopping at Saks. We split a gravlax app $12, and each had the lobster salad $32. The gravlax was divine!! Chopped gravlax base with a dill cucumber relish topped with clovers and just a drizzle of a sour cream sauce on the plate. I was at first apprehensive about chopped gravlax- I prefer mine sliced, but it was incredible. Not at all salty or oily just delightful, almost like salmon tartar. The dill cucumber relish was good enough to stand on its own as a side salad. If you put this app between two slices of brioche it would have made a delicious sandwich. The lobster salad did not disappoint- it was a generous two claws and a tail above a nicoise style salad, with mixed greens, tomatoes, asparagus and hearts of plam. Delightful. We split a tiramisu for dessert- ok, perhaps the only weakness on the menu were the desserts- nothing great- standard cheesecake, berries, apple cobbler, chocolate cake. The service and cuisine are first rate. Two notes- since most of the clientele are women who either work in the store or shop in the store, they do a great effort to make tasty, satisfying meals that have absolutely no "extra" calories- ie oil or butter or starch where it is not necessary. Secondly I always look to see if an establishment makes an efort to have a diverse staff, and they do. The hostess was a black woman, waitstaff look like they spoke 20 langusges. Lunh for two was $100, and I am happy with every penny I spent.
