We were driving down main street a few days ago and I noticed a “Grand Opening” sign, the next day, my daughter and I were having our nails done and walked past the new Restaurant Amarilis Café The sign says Family Restaurant, Spanish and American food.
Okay, piqued my interest!
I poked my head in on our way back to the car and asked if they had a menu I could take with me… no, sorry not yet
I checked the steam table and the board and the food definitely skews toward Puerto Rican/Dominican
It smelled wonderful and they had just started serving lunch, but alas, we had errands to run for my daughter’s dance that night
The next night though… I dragged the Mister…
Seems to be a family run place, everyone is very friendly and I was AMAZED at the patience (and tolerance) they had answering one of their customers’ questions (especially about the Tripe stew…. I’m sorry Ma’am, you’re an adult, there’s no excuse for you to say “EW!” if you're reading this then you know who you are)
They had two fairly large tables of people who were um, shall I say unfamiliar with this particular ethnic cuisine... so they had lots of questions at the counter
We sat at a little side counter and ordered, which was maybe our mistake,
I asked the waitress if they had any pork pastelillos and she only replied that they had beef… okay. We’ll have the beef
I asked about the pernil platter and she looked at me like a deer in the headlights
Pork, yellow rice….
Well, that was just exactly what we got and not even the rice with pigeon peas (which they had JUST Replenished when we were leaving) and no beans
The pork… well it was delicious! A little salty on the edges, perfectly tender nicely seasoned… I’m a sucker for good pernil… the rice was good, but I kept wishing I had the beans on it or at least the arroz con gandules that I swear I saw in the case
The pastelillos were very good, nicely filled, I like the pastry on the outside and there was no trace of grease… Though a guy walked up to the counter and asked for two pork and two chicken… and they handed them right over
So… Yes I will go back… I will go to the counter and I will probably order the mondongo, have my husband get the pork with arroz con gandules AND the beans, and be especially piggy and get a pork AND a chicken pastelilos (and maybe some of the garlic tostones)
see that's the problem with me and new places, I want to try everything!
Overall – food is great, service is “okay” but I’m not holding it against them, they’re brand new and I can overlook that for that PORK!
