I'm back in the saddle again, and went to Al-Dar on Edgware Road this time. I found it distinctly lackluster, with very few exceptions, compared with the lively King's Road venue. Same decor and ambiance (though Edgware Road's is bigger). Servers were poker-faced and uncommunicative. Hot dishes arrived tepid, though fresh, even when they came straight from the kitchen. The roasted aubergine dip was admittedly great (not called babaganouj but the same thing); as were the fresh juices. But haloumi was rubbery; the main dishes, bland (even though my diced lamb in tomato sauce dish was meant to be "spicy" according to the menu - sorry I can't recall the name). The shawarma bread was soggy and nothing like the yummy crispy stuff they had on King's Road.
The piece de resistability was "mint tea" which was actually a pot of black tea (which came to the table with four Lipton tea bags a-dangle) with some mint leaves floating around in it.
I wanted to express my feelings to the manager but he was occupied at another table, smoking up a storm with some pals.
