Went to Agave Restaurant (140 7th Ave S) yesterday for brunch. Had a 1 pm reservation. We got there around 12.50 pm and there were a few groups ahead of us who obviously did not have reservations. Hostess seated them very slowlyand when our turn came, the hostess unapologetically told us that although we had reservations, the only table that was available to us was the one in which the A/C "could" drip water as it had in the past few hours. She had the audacity to ask us if we wanted that table. I asked her why she had seated those who did not have reservations at the "good" tables ahead of us and the hostess kinda nonchalantly & unapologetically told us we could wait or sit at that crappy table.
So we waited. When our table finally opened up around 1.15 pm, we were seated. There were 4 in our group and we ordered: Huevos Rancheros, Poached eggs on toasted brioche, French Toast and Grilled Corn & Cactus with Smoked Tomato Quesadillas, with 2 frozen magaritas and one OJ around 1.20 pm. We did not get our complimentary chips & salsa until we asked for it around 1.40 pm. We got the OJ around that time as well, although to their credit, our magaritas only took 10 mins to arrive!!
Whilst other diners were being served with their food (even those who had arrived AFTER us), we did not get our food. While the waiter did apologize almost half-heartedly, our food did not come. I complained to the male dude who seemed to be the manager around 2pm. He kinda brushed us off, trying to ignore me and saying he would check our order and then saying our food would come. Our food finally did come 2.15pm. The food tasted like crap as it was pretty lukewarm/cold. The huevos rancheros consisted of rubbery blue tortilla as its base, with toppings of supermarket-quality-chilli-corne-carne & fried egg on top. The crappiest huevos rancheros I've had in my life. The french toast was very bland, stale and devoid of any character. Quesillidas tasted like something that they would NOT serve at my firm canteen. Only the brioche was edible. I have to admit - much of the crappy nature of the food had to do with the fact that we had waited SO LONG for the food. I didn't have the energy to complain no more. One of worst dining experiences i've had in NY. Had the manager even attempted to apologize or even look sorry, I would construed this as one of those unfortunate, but unavoidable incidents. As we walked out, the manager was busy talking to the hostess, engaging in idle chatter with the employees. Obviously, he had lots of free time. Wish he would use some of it to make sure that the restaurant is run efficiently.
I really used to like AGAVE. Not any more.
