I went to Agata e Romeo last night with a friend and found that they have taken a new direction. The setting is still elegant, the wines and cheeses the best, but the multiple homemade breads and stuzzichini have been eliminated, and the menu has been reduced and prices slashed. The emphasis is on Roman classics, which Agata has always been a mistress of, even at her most creative, without sacrificing the tranquil, upscale ambience.
We had some super-refined dishes (ravioli with goat's milk, zucchini flowers with ricotta, both great), but some homier ones too, a soup of calamari and potatoes, and melt-in-your-mouth veal scallops smothered in mushrooms. Agata has always been known for her amatriciana, carbonara, and cacio e pepe (in fancy schmancy version with Sicilian saffron-scented pecorino), all of which were on the menu. There is a tasting menu for €50.
This change makes Agata competitive in price with Trattoria Monti and many other mid-level restaurants in an area not exactly crawling with gastronomic destinations.
