Abilene report

Can heartily recommend G. W. s homestyle burgers (on I-20 Business: [south side of I-20biz]) in Abilene. This both for quality and price. A giant "GW" cheeseburger is all of $2.49(!) (about a 1/2 pound burger) and the meat is superb quality with a good "bite" to it, not falling apart cheap ground. It tastes like ground sirloin almost. The burger is assembled to order so the bun is not at all soggy. I severely doubt if they own a microwave here. The fries are freshly out of the fat. Everything (eat in or carry out) is served in a brown paper bag inscribed with your order.

We spotted Abilene's famous place, Joe Allen's BBQ, which was closed for Memorial Day. It has to be a good place because its location is like some sort of decrepit back lot where Jean-Claude Van Damme might battle out a final scene with the bad guys. It looks like a gas station that went out business in the Dust Bowl converted to a BBQ joint. Must be good.

Oh and GW's onion rings received rave review for guy at the next table along with their chicken-fried steak sandwich. Passable fried ice-cream too.
