Back in October or November, I stopped by at Abbondanza's on Bleecker St (between 6th Ave and MacDougal St), and ordered one of their personal pizza pies. I was pretty thrilled with this pizza - thin dough, fresh, homemade mozzarella, tomato sauce with a deep and somewhat unusual flavor combined with fresh basil to give a fabulous experience.
I was thus really looking forward to having a taste of great pizza when I revisited yesterday. Well, what a disappointment. As one of the guys was preparing the pizza, I noticed he started spreading shredded yellow cheese on it. It was too late to do anything, so I waited until the pizza was finished and ate it. Although there was also some fresh mozzarella, the shredded low-quality cheese did not help, and the tomato sauce was noticeably different, i.e. it almost felt like a typical chain food store sauce. The pizza thus went from being excellent to being "OK".
Afterwards, I had a chat with the staff, only to find out that the owner of Abbondanza's changed, which led to different recipes for the pizza.
What a shame!
Does anyone know who the former owner was? They had something really good going on with their pizza, and now this.
