2004 Feudi di San Gregorio Aglianico Rubrato
Picked up a bottle of this recently at Traverso’s in Santa Rosa - $14.99 on sale. I’ve always enjoyed Aglianico – mostly in the form of Aglianico del Vulture, but also Taurasi and others. What I have enjoyed most about it is it’s rusticity, and frankly what I call funk – that oxidized (bitter almond?), earthy, and somehow extra-vinous character that I associate with old school, southern Italian reds. It sounds a little silly, but these wines remind me of those cheesy movies about the Roman Empire, with overweight guys in togas and laurel crowns, gobbling grapes from a bunch, and slurping wine out of golden goblets.
This wine has all of that deep, juicy vinosity , without any oxidative character – a more modern profile for sure, but absolutely delicious. A last glass, had the day after opening, was even better.
