I have always wondered why people post something like this (on the los angeles board).......Im from out of town...coming to your city.... please tell me what the best of your city is...the reality is that these posts are unwieldly and often result in responses that are lackluster....welll, I now find myself in the role of an outsider....For my better half's 32nd b-day, I am treating her to a weekend in SF. My food experience in SF has been limited to Mission district burritos, when I was in college; I obviously need help choosing places to eat at over the 2 days.
I dont want an exhaustive list but we do want to experience food that makes the city what it is, food that is distinctive to the city. We would prefer not to do sushi, mexican or thai, as I believe some of the best examples of these cuisines are where we live--and have it quite often.
While I will take diverse recs. please provide specific assistance finding great places in the following categories:
*Oysters on the half shelf and Dungeness Crab
*the one dinner restaurant in SF not to miss..or..where is the one SF restaurant that you would want to have your last meal in the city at
* best places at the Ferry Building
One of the reasons that I chose SF is because of its reputation as a great restaurant city; Thank you in advance for your help in making the trip a wonderful eating experience.
FYI-Our hotel is at 725 Market St. Do I need to get a car in SF or can i taxi/muni to most places?
