Thanks to all the people here who offered suggestions for our Toronto vacation. This ended up being the sort of trip where we wandered around all day and then found a place nearby to eat, but I thought I would report back. I also passed on the restaurant recs to my husband because he is working on a project that takes him to Toronto every few weeks. I am no foodie expert but here are my views on the restaurants.
L'Unita--My friend and I ate there the first evening before the gluten/meat-free roommate arrived :). She had fish and I had a tortelloni with lobster--both meals were delicious and I liked that the portions were reasonable and not gigantic. We shared a divine dessert of caramel doughnuts and the restaurant also had decent decaf coffee, which I appreciate. I especially appreciated the handmade pasta and the smallish and seasonal menu. The interior was lovely and the service polite and efficient. I would return to this restaurant.
Cora--This was around the corner from our hotel and we ate breakfast there the first morning. Loved it! I ordered oatmeal and it was enough for a family, with berries, granola, syrup, etc. My friend had French toast with a mountain of fruit. The portions are too large and we hated wasting food but everything tasted great and our server was very nice. Decent coffee. Free fudge sample :). Unless you have a giant appetite, I recommend sharing dishes at this restaurant.
Fran's--Meh. I've had better diner food but it was decent. Weak coffee. I would not feel a need to return. I had an omelette that was cooked in too much oil, some decent fried potatoes and possibly the blandest rye toast ever. Server was very polite.
We returned to Cora for our third breakfast and I had the blueberry pancakes. I swapped out the cream for real maple syrup. These were delicious and they did not skimp on the blueberries at all.
We skipped lunch on Friday and just had iced coffee and Kind bars, then decided on an early supper. We were in Kensington Market and decided to try King's Cafe. This was my favorite meal of the trip. It was early so we had very attentive service. My friend was excited to have veg hot and sour soup and the "medium" was enough for 3-4 people. The miso soup was fine but very bland. Spring rolls were tasty and hot and not greasy. We also shared curried rice noodles that were flavorful without being spicy-hot, and a large sushi platter that I absolutely loved, esp. the unusual carrot-Thai basil roll. I would recommend this restaurant and I think there are plenty of choices for meat-eaters--my DH is a carnivore but I think he would enjoy the food.
Dessert was a couple of British/Canadian candy bars from Shoppers. :) We cannot get Flake bars here.
