100 short reviews, Hotel Utah

Hotel Utah – Although the saloon at 4th and Bryant has stood on this corner since 1908, it has only been called the Hotel Utah since 1977. The bar and it’s beautiful and ornately carved bar-back look like fantastic relics from another age – and they are. A cab driver once wistfully told me that Hotel Utah is one of the few remaining venues for live music, and not all of it is amplified. The first and third Sunday of the month is given over to Critical Grass a Bluegrass and Old-Time Music organization. They also serve food. I can comment on their hamburger, which was big and juicy, and they made an attempt at the medium rare that I ordered — though the fries weren’t anything spectacular. The menu includes “Meetinghouse Biscuits” - w/ham hock, black-eyed pea & smoked tomato stew, Chicken Pot Pie, Quesadillas, Thai Curry, Macaroni and Cheese, Grilled Cheese Sandwiches and a lot of down-home bar food. But, food isn’t the attraction: it’s atmosphere. An urban legend has it that Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe dated here. I’ll bet Joe wasn’t obsessing about the food either. No recommendation
