After being told a long time go about A-1 Eastern Pickle in downtown LA. I finally got down there. It only took me six years and I also got my first visit to Langers out of it afterwards. After eating these pickles I was really in the mood for Langers believe me. Progressing from the taste of the fresh pickles and then to eating the best pastrami sandwich I have ever had was amazing. It was a cheap Chowhound culinary experience indeed.
I called in advance and was told if I was buying five gallons or less I didn't need to call ahead. The building looks small from the outside for a place that supplies so many pickles to so many places. I walked into the office and a receptionist explained that they have a few varieties of pickles but to talk to the guy outside. She explained that five gallons now cost $25.00 and took my money. I walked back to the pickling area and a guy comes out and explains that the half sours are what I really want and proceeds to get a five gallon bucket together for me. He brought it out with a sample of the pickles and gave me a taste. The pickles were almost exactly what I was looking for. I was looking for pickles about 10% more sour but he explained they would cure more in the refrigerator. The man hoisted the pickles on his shoulder and took them out to my car and told me to be sure to refrigerate them. I checked the pickles today and they are really good, getting more sour as I had hoped they would. Note-the bucket is very heavy, maybe fifty pounds so be sure to have help at home if you need it.
