With all the talk about Fez and the South Philly BYOBs, I am having a difficult time planning a birthday dinner for my boyfriend.
It's for a Sunday night coming up in a few weeks, and it will be for just the two of us. I can be a foodie, whereas boyfriend is much much less so. He appreciates good food, but 3 stars is all that's required. No consommes or foam :)
The atomosphere has to be warm and friendly, homey even, themed is ok, just not "sterile and minimalist" as he would say. Audrey Claire and Melegano would not work ;). Boyfriend is not into "scene-y" restaurants, and casual/relaxed seems to be the order of the day. Two restaurants that have worked out perfectly for us have been Il Cantuccio and Las Caszuelas.
Figs would be perfect, but they're not open for dinner on Sundays.
So my list now includes the South Philly trifecta of Buon Appetitto, Lucca and L'Angolo. Are any of these open on Sunday? Having never seen any of these, and hearing nothing but good reviews, I'm at a loss, decision-wise. I know they will all be terrific, but am looking for some opinions based on what might be "appropriate" for us.
The other restaurant in the running is Fez -- a cpmpletely different experience, and I'm sure he will appreciate the uniqueness of the whole "opium den" decor, plus his first taste of Moroccan food. I haven't read many reviews, but everyone seems to think that the food is average plus. I also realize that a Sunday dinner will not have the same "party" vibe as a Friday or Saturday; will it be dead in there? It seems like the ritualistic nature of the 8 course feast might be nice.
Any comments are greatly appreciated.
