Late-Summer Salad Days

It must be something she ate. jisforjenn, an avowed "meat and carbs kind of gal," finds herself unaccountably dreaming of salad. In particular, she's been swooning over Crema's ensalada mixta en aderezo de cacahuate enchilada. It's mixed greens with avocado, panela cheese, fresh corn, sesame seeds, and an agreeably sweet peanut-guajillo vinaigrette (jenn ponies up a few extra bucks to add grilled shrimp). "I could eat this salad every day for the rest of my life and be content," she swears. That is, on the days when she isn't craving another recent favorite, Giorgio's of Gramercy's chickpea and avocado salad with roasted tomato, spiced peanuts, and honey-mustard vinaigrette.

jon's current salad craving is escarole, sunchoke, and almond at Otto. On the same menu and almost as good, kathryn adds, is a salad of cucumber, ricotta salata, shallot, and balsamic vinegar, which gets a summery lift from watermelon. Fruit also stars in Fig & Olive's signature salad of figs and olives, with green apple, tomato, walnuts, and three cheeses (goat, Manchego, Gorgonzola dolce), finished with fig and balsamic vinaigrette, LBNJNY reports. And rkaene recommends Nha Trang's tom goi, a salad of shrimp with shredded green papaya.

Many hounds prefer to make their salads at home rather than order them at restaurants, and RGR's in this camp. But she'll make an exception for Eleven Madison Park's spectacular take on tabbouleh, a Frank Gehry-like edifice of lightly smoked couscous draped with curves and swoops of shaved vegetables, which might include cucumber, carrot, and radish. "Truly an amazing combination of flavors and textures," she marvels.

Relatively earthbound, yet satisfyingly old-school, is the Palm's Monday Night salad: fine-chopped romaine and iceberg lettuce with tomato, onion, roasted pepper, and anchovy, rkaene writes. And Hey19 loves the Redhead's tavernish spin on the Caesar, crowned with a "one-eyed Susan," a fried egg in a round of bread.
