Overheard on the San Francisco Bay Area Board

"Ordinarily, they won't be open Mondays, but they were open today. I know because we ate lunch there today. Apparently, we weren't the only ones who knew - there was about a 20 minute line to get food. We were lucky enough to get a table. We had the pastrami (fabulous), the tuna (not to my taste), the pastrami cheese fries (very good, but I didn't think they were quite as good as they sounded), and the kugel (very good - like a noodle pudding)." – Martin Strell on Wise Sons Jewish Deli in the Mission District

"I found out about Berkeley Bowl's 'secret menu' when I was looking for beef tendon, which isn't in their butcher case. The butcher recommended that I get 'meat scraps,' which are just leftover chunks of sinewy, fatty beef. Only $.99/lb, excellent!" – leavemeakiss on Berkeley Bowl in the East Bay

"At lunchtime yesterday we were near Castro Valley and hungry, so I found European Market on my phone. ... The stuffed cabbage is the best I've had. Chopped liver was just like homemade. Pirogs were excellent, quite light compared with the usual heavy, greasy lumps. Some sort of caponata-like eggplant salad was great." – Robert Lauriston on European Market Deli and Cafe in the East Bay
