New Feature: CHOW Lists

We’re happy to announce that we’re launching CHOW Lists as a beta feature. CHOW Lists will allow users to create lists of places that will appear on one page, with a map and with descriptions of what the list is and of each item on the list.

For instance, users can create a list of places they want to go on their vacation in Oregon, or their 10 favorite pizza places in New York, of favorite brunch places in Los Angeles, etc. and set those lists as private or make them public and share them with everyone.

The lists will be promoted on the boards, restaurants&bars pages, and in the navigation bar under My Chow and under Restaurants&Bars.

The home page is http://www.chow.com/lists

You can find a FAQ about this new feature at http://www.chow.com/chowlists-faq

We’re really excited about releasing this, but please keep in mind it is in beta, so we’re likely to encounter some problems, and there are a number of improvements planned for the next release.

Please take a look, give it a try and let us know here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/561703 if you have any feedback.

Unable to edit restaurant places. I used to be able to do this before the web-ste change. Now, no "edit" button appears on the page. Also, even when "adding" a new place, the screen is quirky. The restaurant name doesn't appear in a block at the top, and there are hidden buttons at the bottom. No "save" button....

The commenting features on CHOW stories are a lot less advanced than the Chowhound boards, as are the moderation tools. We do try to keep those discussions honest, friendly, and on topic, as well, but unfortunately it's more difficult to stay on top of. If you spot comments that are a problem, please send me a heads up at moderators@chowhound.com

To The Powers That Be At CHOWHOUND,

A simple word of thanks for your labor of love that I stumbled upon yesterday and said, "self...
I like the looks of this little Island off the coast of Las Vegas for just that... chowhounds as...
I are one."
I mean after all, isn't that a large portion of why we are on this little wobbly rock number three moving ever so slowly away from the Sun.
So in summary, (while we are spinning) thank you for the opportunity to look in and stand upon your doggy dish of delights. I will try to be a "good dog"... and mind my bones of contention down this cornucopia of culinaryisms.

Bones Appétit,

Whoof...

Email poster when reply is added

I'd like to put in a vote for this one as well. I like the "my chow" option, but if i've lagged on any site for a few days, sometimes those "you have a reply" e-mails bring me back to the site. I use this optional feature on a few other boards I post on, and it brings me to those sites more often.

On a related note...those sites that DO have this option, when you click on the link within the e-mail, it brings you directly to the point in the thread wher you'd last left off, and you can start reading there. In other words you don't have to scroll through posts and posts and posts trying to find where you last left off, or where your original post was. I wish CH did this. In some of those 100 + post threads, it's hard to find your place.

It's an optional thing, so I don't see what the problem would be in bringing it here...either click "notify me when a reply is posted" or leave the box empty and therefore get no e-mails.

It is not far to the other customers or the owners of the establishment. If the host or hostess is selling tables, the management is loosing out and they will inturn loose customers.

Marking video links?

Hi Karen, Thanks for your query. When I write the copy that accompanies the CHOW Tips, I always try to summarize the video content in a short sentence or two. We are investigating closed captioning for our videos which would allow you to read as well as watch them -- hopefully that is something we can explore more in the future as we grow in size. It certainly seems like there demand for it. In terms of marking the videos as videos -- we do! But in a subtle way. If you see a graphic with little lines on it, it is a video story. You can also see the words "CHOW Tip Video" in the sidebar above the video stories. That should cover you for most parts of the site apart from the footer. We've also chosen to turn off "auto-play" options so that you will never be forced to watch a video you don't choose to watch. Finally, in our redesign, due out in the next month or so, video promos will be a different size than regular promos, so you can be sure to avoid them if you choose. Though as a member of the CHOW video team I hope you won't choose to!

Thanks again,

Meredith of CHOW

Chow Mobile !

I seem to be adding to a thread that came to a stop a year and a half ago, but I just found on my Palm TX that Chowhound points me to a mobile version exactly as it did for Chuckles here on 1/24/07, and the resulting page contained only a recipe search function, AND it led to an error message if I tried to click any of the recipe links!

Is there actually a Chowhound mobile version? That refers to restaurants rather than recipes?

Ok, thanks for responding. :) I am glad it's on the radar, as I think it would be a really good improvement for the site, and by allowing people to add it to plaxo pulse, friendfeed, Facebook posted items, or what have you, that could give publicity to the site also.

Not sure if it is possible or if this has been discussed, but it would be nice to have a button in which you push to send the address/directions to a location sent to your own cell phone. Just something to think about...

Unfortunately, some users have reported problems editing Places. It's been reported to Engineering. If you'd like to review I Sodi, we'd recommend you start a new thread on the Manhattan board. If you "Add a Place" to your review, it will be linked from the Place page within 30 minutes or so.

You can email moderators@chowhound.com if you have facts you'd like us to add to the Place page.

inviting others to an event?

We don't allow promotion of events. However, if a chowhound wants to organize a group for dining, he/she can follow our guidelines at http://www.chowhound.com/topics/367605#2975390

The expectation is that the event is specifically for hounds, and not another event that you're just soliciting attendees for.

No, it shouldn't need you to clear the passwords, etc. It was the temporary files that I meant. That's certainly a very strange problem. Can you forward a copy of a couple of recent emails you've received to me at jacquilynne dot schlesier at cnet dot com?

I would like to have you consider a new section on the RECIPES section: LUNCH BOX IDEAS....

with the cost of food - I am packing lunches to take to work / school for the family.

My son's summer job is outside - so I need to have ideas that are Small cooler friendly!

AND..... as for the rest of us

I can only take so many leftovers and ham sandwiches....

Please help us stay on track and brown bag it when we can !
